Health leader comes to Grand Rapids

Shannon Trilli is coming to the Grand Rapids District on March 10 as the keynote speaker for Bishop's Day: Reshape Your World. Shannon has been on the staff of The United Methodist Committee on Relief since 2008. Recently she was named as UMCOR's new Director of Global Health.
Workshops offered at Bishop's Day, hosted at Cornerstone, focus on domestic and international mission, local church outreach, health and welfare minsitries, hospitality ministries, and ministries with children, youth and adults. A panel discussion during the lunch break features five young adults who are active in outreach and mission, both locally and globally. Closing worship will be led by District Superintendent Laurie Haller. Cost is $17. Register now online.
Shannon Trilli is scheduled to speak at 9:10 am. She says of her experience with UMCOR :“It is 2012, and too many people, particularly women and children, continue to perish from preventable diseases, hunger, and lack of access to water and basic services.” She adds. “I firmly believe that United Methodists and our partner communities and organizations can build on our current efforts to combat those situations both in the US and around the globe.”
Before her appointment as the head of Global Health, Shannon directed the Imagine No Malaria (INM) program, which focuses on implementing and scaling up community-based programs in 18 countries to reduce the mortality rate in sub-Saharan Africa due to malaria. Under her leadership, INM (on behalf of The United Methodist Church) distributed more than 600,000 mosquito nets in Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zimbabwe, among others.
The hallmark of the INM program was the expansion of UMCOR’s local implementation partners and international donors, including the United Nations Foundation, NetsForLife®, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as part of the global Alliance for Malaria Prevention.
Shannon says, “My aspiration is to position UMCOR’s Global Health programs as a thoughtful and passionate community-based partner that delivers excellent, results—healthier lives and stronger communities.”
